My Ashtanga yoga journey began a little over a year ago in January 2018 when I made the decision to join my local Ashtanga studio in Victoria BC, Canada. Having practised vinyasa yoga for 10 years prior, I saw Ashtanga as a natural next step in developing my practice. While I already had a deep love for yoga, I had no idea how much Ashtanga would stoke this passion.
Over the past year, I have grown tremendously. I now do things daily in my practice that a year ago I didn’t believe I could ever do. The progress in my physical progress has been obvious, but what I perhaps did not notice until more recently was the personal growth that has accompanied my physical developments. Ashtanga teaches you strength, power, and flexibility not only of the body, but also of the mind. The strict routine, repetition of the practice, and challenges that arise within the practice create a shift in your thinking and approach to life.
I have heard it said that the decision of an Ashtanga practitioner to travel to Mysore, India to practice at the K Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute (http://www.kpjayshala.com/) stems from a deep yearning to do so. For me, this is certainly true. I feel called to travel to the place where this amazing form of yoga originated, and to completely dedicate myself to the practice over a two month period. My plan is to do this in one year’s time, over January and February of 2020, and as such, over the next year I want to dive further into all aspects of this practice. My intention for this blog is that it will serve as a way for me to chart my progress, with a particular emphasis on keeping myself accountable to my 6 day a week commitment to the practice (barring Moon Days) and most importantly, delving into the philosophy underlying Ashtanga and yoga more generally. Hopefully, by the time I travel to India I will have seen much more progress within my practice at all levels, and this blog will be a documentation of that journey.
